Planet of the Apes Game Announced
Movie tie-ins are not uncommon these days. Games based on movies still happen, though not as frequently as they used to. They are typically known for not being… well, good. But every now and then, a movie based game comes along and not only is fun to play, but represents the movie it is based on well. Today it was announced that Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier will be coming and it looks pretty damn good.
Published by FoxNext, the video game division of 20th Century Fox, and The Imaginarium, the motion capture studio behind the movie (run by Andy Serkis), the project appears to be taking a much more cinematic approach, much like Telltale Games does it their titles. It is a proven formula that has worked many times over, so why not right?
The game, developed by Imaginati, will have players interacting and making decisions every 15 or 20 seconds or so, which will show what kind of leader they want to be for both Human and Ape factions. This will take place over a two to three hour playtime. You won’t directly control any of the characters, but the choices you make will have major implications on how the story progresses. Imaginati hopes this will add more replay value to the game as it triggers different endings, depending on your choices.
The developer spoke with IGN:
The pace of the storytelling is just super-intense compared to any of these other games,” explains Imaginati founder Martin Alltimes. “There’s no opening and closing drawers, no searching through inventories. It’s all about you making choices that affect relationships with other characters and, in the long term, how those relationships play out, and how the story plays out. It’s a creative risk, but when we talked to everyone on the team, they really believed in it. It would have been very easy for us to copy what had gone before.
Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier is set to come to Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC this fall.
